Why This Chapter Exists

"The people MSF serves are the people I grew up around. Those who don't get a heads up when things go wrong, who live alert, always, because the world doesn't give them a break."

Alexis Garcia President · Friends of MSF GSU · EMT, Grady EMS · MSF Field Partner
Our Mission

Three promises.
One mission.

Friends of MSF at Georgia State University is a student chapter officially recognized by MSF USA, founded on the belief that students from every major, background, and career path have something essential to contribute to global humanitarian medicine.

Every dollar reaches the field.

Every cent raised by this chapter is donated directly to MSF USA. No overhead. No exceptions. Surgeons in conflict zones. Vaccines in epidemic responses. Clean water in displacement camps. That is where your money goes.

Every event teaches something real.

Speaker series featuring voices from across the global health and humanitarian world. Film screenings. Panel discussions on active crises. We don't sanitize the reality. We illuminate it so you leave knowing more than when you arrived.

Every student belongs here.

All majors. All backgrounds. All class standings. MSF needs doctors and engineers, supply chain specialists, psychologists, journalists, and data scientists. With 169 nationalities on their team, diversity is not a talking point. It is the mission.

The World That Needs Us

Right now. Not someday. Now.

MSF is an independent, neutral, impartial organization operating where others cannot or will not go. Founded in 1971 by doctors and journalists who believed medical needs outweigh national boundaries, they go where conditions are worst because that's where they are needed most. Here is where what you are studying is already needed.

MSF operates independently. 98% of their funding comes from private donors like us, not governments. That means they answer to no political agenda. They respond based on need alone. And that independence is protected every time someone on this campus shows up, raises funds, and gives.

The crises below are not history. They are happening right now. And what you are studying on this campus is exactly what those places need.

🇸🇩 Sudan
12 million displaced
60% need aid

The world's largest displacement crisis. Nearly 12 million people forcibly displaced. 60% of Sudan's 50 million people need humanitarian assistance. 38% of children under five in displacement sites are acutely malnourished. MSF teams treat patients daily while warring parties bomb hospitals.

🇵🇸 Gaza
800k+ consultations
22,700 surgeries in 2025

In 2025, MSF supported 1 in 5 hospital beds in Gaza, assisted 1 in 3 deliveries, and distributed over 700 million litres of water. Over 100,000 trauma cases handled. 40,000+ individual mental health sessions provided in a single year.

🇨🇩 DR Congo
6.9 million displaced
Largest MSF operation

DRC was MSF's largest operational presence in 2024. Conflict displaced 4 million people. Cholera, measles, and mpox outbreaks spread through overcrowded displacement camps. MSF treated survivors of sexual violence averaging two people every hour.

Not one dollar
stays here.

More than 98% of MSF's total funding comes from private donors, not governments. That independence is what allows MSF to respond to crises based on need alone, without waiting for political approval. From 2009 to 2023, 87 cents of every dollar spent by MSF USA went directly to programs. When you come to a collab dinner or click donate, you are part of that 98%.

Transparency pledge: Friends of MSF at GSU commits to full transparency on every fundraiser. What percentage goes to MSF USA and what, if anything, covers chapter operating costs. We will always tell you exactly where your money goes before you give it. That is the standard MSF USA holds us to, and the standard we hold ourselves to.

Membership

Whatever you are
majoring in —
it is needed.

All majors. All backgrounds. All class standings. The only requirement is that you show up with love and support for the mission and for the people MSF serves around the world who will never know your name but will feel the impact of your presence.

When you join Friends of MSF at GSU, you don't just join an organization. You become an advocate. A healer. A voice for people the world has forgotten. You become someone who looks at a person in a conflict zone, a displacement camp, a collapsed hospital and sees a human being who deserves the same chance at life that you have.
